Lumberton is a city in Hardin County, Texas, in the Piney Woods and Big Thicket country of Southeast Texas, about twelve miles north of Beaumont. The 2020 census counted 13,557 residents, and the city is part of the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area, known regionally as the Golden Triangle. The community began as a rural railroad stop on the Gulf, Beaumont and Kansas City line, established before 1902 to serve the sawmills and logging camps of the dense Big Thicket forests. That timber heritage still shapes the area's identity, and the heavily wooded landscape — longleaf pine, hardwoods, and creek bottoms — remains Lumberton's defining physical feature. Village Creek State Park lies within the city. Its 2,466 forested acres, acquired by the state in 1979, preserve a remnant of the Big Thicket and offer hiking, birding, and canoeing on Village Creek, a popular flat-water paddling stream. U.S. Highway 96 provides the main route south to Beaumont and north to Silsbee, while Houston lies about 90 minutes west.
