Brookshire is a city in southern Waller County, Texas, located along U.S. Highway 90 and Interstate 10 roughly thirty miles west of downtown Houston. The town is named for Captain Nathan Brookshire, who received title to a league of land as a member of Stephen F. Austin's fifth colony in 1835. Early settlers were skeptical of the coastal prairie setting, but the rich alluvial soil of the Brazos River bottomland, combined with the arrival of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad, turned Brookshire into a thriving agricultural community. The city grew as a rail and farming center, and its location on the Katy Prairie shaped an economy built around agriculture, ranching, and later light industry and logistics. Today Brookshire sits at the far western edge of the greater Houston metropolitan area, offering a rural small-town contrast to the suburban development spreading outward from Katy and the city's west side. Brookshire's population is roughly 5,000, with most residents owning their homes in a setting that still feels open and sparsely developed. The community is served by Royal Independent School District, formed in 1959 from the consolidation of the Brookshire and Pattison school districts, and renamed Royal ISD in 1960.
